About us

Shantarin is the medieval place name for a city in the western Iberian Peninsula, a name derived from the Arabisation of Santa Irene—Irene being the Romanised Greek word εἰρήνη (eirēnē) for peace.

In the imagined city of Shantarin, women and men from the North, the South, and the East, Jews, Christians, Moslems, speakers of several languages, lived and thrived, dreamt and created, produced and traded, contributing to the construction and prosperity of the city, in peace and freedom.

SHANTARIN, an independent publishing house based in Lisbon, is a home of freedom and intercultural dialogue, built on the pillars of poetry, history, art, and translation.
